Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study
Maternal and child health (MCH) remains one of the most critical areas of focus in global health development, particularly in low-resource settings like Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. In Nigeria, maternal and child mortality rates remain high, with inadequate healthcare access, cultural practices, and low health literacy contributing to poor outcomes (Aliyu & Musa, 2023). Development communication has been identified as a key strategy in promoting maternal and child health by raising awareness, educating communities, and encouraging health-seeking behaviors, such as attending prenatal visits, delivering at health facilities, and practicing good nutrition (Oluwaseun & Yusuf, 2024). By using communication tools such as community radio, social media, and interpersonal communication, development communication aims to bridge knowledge gaps, dispel myths, and influence positive health behaviors. This study explores the role of development communication in promoting maternal and child health in Lafia, evaluating how effective communication strategies have contributed to improving MCH outcomes.

1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the existence of several maternal and child health programs in Lafia, challenges such as low utilization of healthcare services, poor prenatal care attendance, and high infant mortality persist (Adamu, 2023). These issues are partly attributed to a lack of comprehensive, culturally relevant, and effective communication strategies that resonate with local communities. This study aims to assess the role of development communication in improving maternal and child health outcomes in Lafia, identifying barriers to success and providing recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of MCH communication programs.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of development communication in promoting maternal and child health in Lafia.

  2. To evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies used in MCH campaigns in Lafia.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by communities in adopting MCH practices promoted through development communication.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How has development communication contributed to promoting maternal and child health in Lafia?

  2. How effective are the communication strategies used in MCH campaigns in Lafia?

  3. What challenges hinder the adoption of maternal and child health practices in Lafia?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Development communication significantly promotes maternal and child health in Lafia.

  2. Effective communication strategies positively influence maternal and child health outcomes in Lafia.

  3. Community challenges reduce the effectiveness of MCH communication programs in Lafia.

1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it highlights the importance of development communication in improving maternal and child health outcomes in Nigeria, particularly in Lafia. By evaluating the effectiveness of communication strategies, the research provides insights into the factors that contribute to the success or failure of MCH campaigns. The findings will be valuable for health communication practitioners, policymakers, and development organizations working to improve MCH in Nasarawa State, offering evidence-based recommendations for enhancing communication efforts.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on the role of development communication in promoting maternal and child health in Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State. It does not cover other regions or broader issues related to general health communication.
